And The Oscar Goes To…Part 2

Well, that happened!  The biggest moment in The Academy Awards history – no, not Suicide Squad winning an Oscar – La La Land almost won Best Picture!

Up until the final award of the night, the show was running like a well-oiled machine.  Host Jimmy Kimmel was beautifully acerbic, charming and funny.  Possibly one of the best Oscar hosts since the great Billy Crystal.  The winners were announced, pretty much as expected and it was looking like the night would end without much controversy, political or otherwise.

And then Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway appeared to present the big one, Best Picture.  Reunited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their classic film, Bonnie & Clyde.  Once the nominees had been announced, Beatty opened the envelope and appeared to be doing some kind of schtick before announcing La La Land as the winner.

But, hold the phone.  There was a bit of a kerfuffle on stage among the victorious cast and crew of Damien Chazelle’s musical.  Then, all of a sudden it was revealed that there had been a mistake.  The winning film was not La La Land but, rather, Moonlight.  It has since emerged that there are duplicate envelopes on either side of the stage and Beatty had been handed the previous winner’s envelope – Emma Stone, who won for Best Actress in La La Land.  It was this card that Dunaway read from, after being handed the card by Beatty, and thus mistakenly declaring La La Land the winner.

Who knows why, upon seeing the card, the pair of them didn’t notice the error.  Maybe a trip to Specsavers is in order.  What matters is that Moonlight took the top prize and created one of the most memorable moments in Oscar history.  Not even David Niven’s streaker could come close to this one!

All that aside, I enjoyed watching, as I do every year, in the middle of the night.  Although, by the time this incident occured, I was probably in a sleep-deprived state so assumed it was part of the show!

Next year, Oscar turns 90 so I’m hoping for a return from Billy Crystal, even though Jimmy Kimmel did an amazing job especially right at the end.  Whatever happens, nothing can take away the glory from Barry Jenkins and Moonlight.
